Understanding the Emergency Lighting requirements for your site

Updated: Jun 24, 2022

A lot of duty holders don't understand just how important emergency lighting is for the safety of occupants at the premises they look after. It is the guiding force that helps illuminate the pathway to a safe exit for occupants in the event of any emergency situation.

Just as important as it is to understand when emergency lighting is required, it is also important to understand what type of emergency lighting is suitable for your specific building. For example, different premises will require different levels of emergency lighting. It is always important that the service provider that you choose, are informed as to the type of building to expect and are able to survey it, getting a clear understanding of the general amount of people that tend to move through the building at any which time.

As briefly mentioned above, to correctly install the right emergency lighting for your site, there must first be a consultation and site survey performed, this to determine the best plan of action for the implementation of the emergency lighting.

A key element of this is understanding the mode of operation for the emergency lighting at your site. In most cases your emergency lighting type will be either maintained or non-maintained, the type of site will determine this. Maintained emergency lighting means that emergency lighting lamps are to be on at all times. Non-maintained means that emergency lighting will only activate once the power supply to the normal lighting has failed. This non-maintained type of lighting is the most common type of emergency lighting in workplaces where the normal lighting is mostly on at all times whilst occupants are present.

One thing to make very clear is that emergency lighting will differ from site to site, each individual site will have different emergency lighting requirements, an individual site will require its own bespoke and unique setup, ensuring that the most suitable emergency lighting is implemented and built around the daily use that occupants have in that building.
