Stress Awareness Month 2021

In the UK stress is overlooked by many, with physical conditions often being taken much more seriously. We know that times are particularly difficult, but it still doesn’t mean stress is being acknowledged as much as it perhaps should be.

We are currently in the midst of a real threat to public health, especially in the UK. To put this into perspective - according to the Mental health Foundation, 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed at some point over the last year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope.

A study on stress carried out by “Stress Management Society” and gathering data from 2000 British adults, identified that 65% of people in the UK have felt more stressed since the COVID-19 restrictions began in March 2020.

Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems such as anxiety as well as depression, and millions in the UK are currently suffering. It is widely acknowledged that stress can easily lead to other serious health problems such as heart disease, digestive problems, and insomnia.

The importance of stress awareness month is a vital one, the campaign has been running now every April since 1992. The month focuses on the awareness of both the causes and cures of stress. In this years stress awareness campaign, 3 key features have been highlighted as: disconnection, uncertainty, and a worrying loss of control.

The “Stress Management Society” have taken a practical approach to this and have various solutions in forms of challenges that they’ve tasked people to undertake. One of them being the “30 Day Challenge”. They’ve sighted this as a way to “maximise your chances of turning useful knowledge and techniques into positive behavioural change”.
