Fire door safety week is here! What is it & why is it important to raise awareness..
Updated: Sep 27, 2022
Every year, Fire Door Safety Week raises awareness and helps save lives. The aim is to identify fire doors that are ill-fitted, damaged or poorly maintained, and ensure that all buildings are equipped with fire doors that are fit for purpose.
Campaign Objectives
To raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors, drawing attention to specific issues such as poor installation and maintenance.
To encourage building owners and users to check the operation and condition of their fire doors and to report those that aren’t satisfactory.
To link together the initiatives of many organisations with common interests in the fire door and passive fire protection industries.
To engage and educate people, helping the whole building industry and every property owner to understand the correct specification, supply, installation, operation, inspection and maintenance.
There are some simple checks you can undertake depending on whether you are a building owner, manager, a landlord or occupier.
5 things to check for fire door safety:
1. CERTIFICATION - This provides evidence proving that it is tested to an appropriate British or European standard by a third party accreditation scheme.
2. APERTURES - The frame and glazing are not damaged and in good condition.
3. GAPS AND SEALS - The maximum gap underneath a fire door is 8-10mm depending on the specification, between the bottom edge of the door and the floor.
4. CLOSERS – Hydraulic device that automatically closes the door once opened should be fully functional.
5. OPERATION – The intumescent strips must be installed either around the door or around the inside of the frame and the door should close securely.
